“I just don’t feel like myself.”
Many women arrive at this stage saying the same thing. That feeling is often hard to pin down, particularly when symptoms appear gradually and don’t follow a neat pattern. The Menopause Clarity Programme is designed to help you understand what is happening in your body, identify where you are in the menopausal transition, and give you clinically led guidance on what to do next.
This programme focuses on assessment, explanation, and early intervention. It is not about guessing, dismissing symptoms, or treating menopause as something you simply have to “put up with”.
Why is this happening?
Menopause occurs in all menstruating females due to oestrogen deficiency. Many women experience symptoms for several years before menopause, which is marked by the final menstrual period. It is a diagnosis that is made retrospectively and can affect many different organ systems. Without appropriate management, it may contribute to long-term health risks such as cardiovascular disease or osteoporosis.
The diagnosis of menopause is clinical, based on the absence of menses for 12 months, and does not require further testing for appropriately presenting patients. This guidance is reflected in current best practice from BMJ.
Peri-menopause or menopause?
Supportive laboratory work may show variable hormone levels earlier in the menopausal transition stage and elevated levels in later stages. Vasomotor symptoms — episodes of profuse heat accompanied by sweating and flushing — are commonly experienced by the majority of women during the menopausal transition and are driven by the decline of oestrogen production in the later stages.
This understanding is supported by evidence from the National Library of Medicine, highlighting how hormonal change can present differently across individuals and over time.
You may be experiencing one or several of the following symptoms:
- Difficulty maintaining your weight
- Changes in sleep habits
- Menstrual cycle change
- Low energy
- Irritability
- Migraine
- Brain fog
- Low mood
- Reduced libido
- Loss of self-esteem
